To close port 21 (ftp):

Windows NT 4.0 - follow these steps:

  1. Click on StartProgramsAdministrative ToolsServer Management
  2. On the title bar select ComputerServices
  3. Select FTP Publishing Service then click on Stop


Windows 2000 - follow these steps:

  1. Click on StartSettingsControl Panel Administrative ToolsInternet Services Manager
  2. Double click on desired machine then
  3. highlight "FTP Site"
  4. on title bar select Action then Stop


Windows XP - follow these steps:

  1. Click on StartControl Panel
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  3. click on Internet Information Services (IIS)Details
  4. Make sure File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service is unchecked
  5. Click OK
  6. Click Next


Linux Redhat 6.2

  1. Edit the file /etc/inetd.conf
  2. Comment out the line starting with ftp by placing a hash # mark at the beginning of the line
  3. Type killall -HUP inetd to load new settings
