To close port 21 (ftp):

Windows NT 4.0 - follow these steps:
- Click on Start → Programs → Administrative Tools
→ Server Management
- On the title bar select Computer → Services
- Select FTP Publishing Service then click on Stop
Windows 2000 - follow these steps:
- Click on Start → Settings → Control Panel →
Administrative Tools → Internet Services Manager
- Double click on desired machine then
- highlight "FTP Site"
- on title bar select Action then Stop
Windows XP - follow these steps:
- Click on Start → Control Panel
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs
- click on Internet Information Services (IIS) → Details
- Make sure File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service is unchecked
- Click OK
- Click Next
Linux Redhat 6.2
- Edit the file /etc/inetd.conf
- Comment out the line starting with ftp by placing a hash #
mark at the beginning of the line
- Type killall -HUP inetd to load new settings
